About

We are Anton and Simon. Between us, we have been tracking our finances for over 14 years and tried everything from various mobile and desktop apps, to plain text accounting and spreadsheets. Independently of each other, we both grew increasingly concerned about privacy on the internet.

At the end of 2024 Anton - with a background in software systems engineering - decided to tackle the pain points of plain text accounting. Heavily inspired by its data model, he started building the prototype of Scrooje. In early 2025 he shared it with Simon, who brings experience in business finance and a lifelong habit of living in spreadsheets. Simon got inspired by the privacy promises of Scrooje and quickly converted to a user and joined the effort.

Scrooje is bootstrapped. We have no outside investors, and we intend to keep it that way.

Mission

Our mission is to prove that privacy and convenience don’t have to be a tradeoff - and to build the personal finance tool that demonstrates it.

Principles

Privacy and security are core to everything we build. Especially in the current state of affairs, when we are compelled to sacrifice our privacy day by day for a tiny bit of convenience, or sometimes just to access a popular app or website.

The rise of AI has made this more urgent, not less. Corporations sitting on vast amounts of personal data now have nearly limitless capability to build detailed profiles of individuals. We strive to be on the opposite side.

We firmly believe that every person deserves privacy. Having nothing to hide is not the same as wanting your information exposed to third parties.
