Scrooje is web-based client-side encrypted application to track personal finances and net worth in multiple currencies, across multiple bank accounts and types of assets. Scrooje offers maximum data security, lightning-fast calculations, keyboard control and powerful filtering capabilities.
For now, Scrooje is free because we’re in the Alpha stage. Once the Beta version is released, some features may be available by subscription only. But we’ll give you plenty of notice before that happens, so you’ll have time to export or move your data. Keep an eye on your email and in-app announcements. If you’d like to support us early, you can subscribe to a paid plan via the web app.
Everywhere! We support all currencies and languages for transaction comments, and we don’t restrict access by region. The UI is currently in English only - no localization yet.
Not yet, it’s web-only right now but a mobile version is on our long-term roadmap. As a workaround, you can use the web version on your mobile device, as long as your browser supports modern web standards like WebAssembly (WASM). Most up-to-date iOS and Android devices should work fine.
Scrooje is the web-based application, so you may use it on any device having a web-browser that supports modern features. We recommend Chromium-based browsers. iOS below version 26 are not supported. You can go to the web app and if the browser is not supported, you will find it out immediately.
Yes! You can use Scrooje on unlimited devices - we don’t cap device usage per account.
Just sign up with a username and password, and you’re in. We suggest creating a test book first and running through the setup guide, but you can jump straight to real data if you prefer.
Follow this link and you are in. That’s the quickest way to see the app in action or explore how common scenarios are handled.
If you already have an account, create a book, and during setup you’ll see an option to populate it with demo data.
Reset it via your registered email. That’ll restore account access, but not your data - for that, you need the book secret key you backed up during setup. After a reset, there’s a 2-day lockdown period: no server-side changes are allowed (only local ones), so your edits won’t sync during that period.
A passkey is like a password that you don’t need to enter or remember. Instead, your device authenticates using a random cryptographic key that is stored in your physical hardware key.
Yes, you can but only if you have a compatible hardware key. Right now we only support physical FIDO keys. Software passkeys won’t work.
Your hardware key creates an encryption key that hides your root ones inside the browser. Even if someone gets a copy of your browser’s storage, they won’t be able to decrypt anything without having your physical key.
You can still reset your credentials using your registered email address. During credentials reset, you will be able to link a new hardware key. You will also need the book secret key, which you saved during the initial setup. Without this, your data will remain encrypted and cannot be recovered. Once you complete the credentials reset process you can continue using the app as usual.
We intend to keep the service fully functional even if it operates at a loss. If by 2029 the revenue doesn’t cover operational costs, we might discontinue some features, but keep the core service running nonetheless as we do and plan to use it ourselves.
If the highly unlikely decision is made to retire the service completely, you can export your data to plain text accounting format, CSV, or a system of your choice.
Your encrypted data lives in AWS S3 and can always be handed off directly to you - as long as you have your book secret keys, your data is accessible regardless of what happens to us.
Two reasons: convenience and shared costs.
We handle durability and availability so you don’t have to think about backups, uptime, or infrastructure. You retain full control over the data itself, provably, because leaving is a button click or a CLI export away.
Reliable market data providers aren’t free. Spreading that cost across users makes it significantly cheaper than each person sourcing and maintaining their own data feeds.
If you account for the time spent on maintaining self-hosted solution, it may as well end up more expensive than a subscription-based service. We handle the infrastructure so you can focus on your finances, not on maintaining the tool you use to track them.
Beyond the hours spent, there’s the ongoing background worry of whether your setup is working correctly. We handle that so you don’t have to.
Data safety
Data is fully encrypted with client-side encryption before it hits our servers. Learn more.
Only your email. It’s used for account recovery and important updates, and is optional but recommended. Third parties (like payment providers) may collect additional info - check our Privacy policy for details.
Your data is only accessible through your device and your unique decryption key. Keep your device secure: don’t hand it to untrusted people, avoid malware, and keep your software up to date. On our side, we encrypt everything - even in the event of a breach, hackers would only get encrypted data they can’t use without your key.
Delete your book in settings - confirm by typing the book name, and it’s gone. Your book will stay recoverable on our servers for 28 days, then will be permanently deleted. The same applies to your user account: it’s marked for deletion and can be restored within that window.
Only with your unique decryption key - so back it up offline. Also, be careful with browser crash reports: memory dumps might contain secret keys. Crash reporting isn’t enabled by default, but it’s safer to disable crash reporting unless you know exactly what’s being sent.
No. We only see encrypted blobs and can’t decrypt them - the decryption key stays with you. Even if our servers were breached, attackers would get nothing useful without your individual key.
No, we can’t. Our security policy and access controls prohibits from overwriting your encrypted data. This limits what we can do through support. If something goes wrong, the most we can offer is rolling back your data to an earlier version. You would then decrypt and fix it yourself.
No. We have no access to your financial records - they’re encrypted before they reach our servers. There’s is nothing to sell even if we wanted. We don’t intend to monetize your data.
We have completed a review of our comprehensive security design document with implementation details by an independent cryptographer. Feedback was generally positive:
Cryptographically, the document is top notch and the app well designed. However, the document lacked diagrams, flow charts, process diagrams, etc. that are very useful for easy understanding.
We plan to have a more formal audit later. Meanwhile, you are welcome to review our open source protocol implementation available in scrooje-toolkit repository.
Usage
At this stage Scrooje does not offer automatic bank feed, but this is something that we may implement in the future. The issue is that bank synchronization is typically a privacy nightmare, especially when using a third-party provider. The server will see all your bank transactions, lowering the privacy guaranteed by our application.
Currently you can have 1 book. After the Alpha stage this number will be larger depending on the selected plan.
If you would like to have more books, you can subscribe to a plan through the app. That’s also a great way to support us.
Yes, you can track your budget using our service. Current functionality allows you to monitor the status of your income, expenses, assets and liabilities, and set financial goals.
Yes. Liabilities accounts live under, Accounts -> Balance Sheet -> Liabilities. You’ll find debt obligations there. With our analysis tools, you can track receivables and payables: bank loans, money lent to friends, employer-reimbursable expenses, or debts owed to your company.
Not for official purposes. For personal use only - not for tax purposes or official reporting. Consult a professional accountant in your jurisdiction for compliance. The app isn’t designed for full-scale business use.
No hard limit. Configure as many as you need in your chart of accounts.
No hard limit. Set up as many expense categories and sub-categories as you need.
Yes. It’s calculated automatically once you enter assets and liabilities, and updates with income, expenses, and as you add transactions.
Yes. Exchange rates update daily, so you’ll always see current values across currencies.
Yes. You can assign custom values to any asset and it’ll be included in your net worth calculation. US stock prices are updated automatically. For everything else, update values periodically to keep them current.
Yes - the app handles custom assets. Some coins are tracked automatically, others need manual updates.
Double-entry accounting can feel intimidating at first, especially if you’re not used to it - and for some cases it might be overkill. But the learning curve isn’t steep, and the clarity it brings is worth it. There’s a reason these principles have been around for 500+ years.
It’s the accounting equation at work. In double-entry accounting, income accounts have a natural credit balance, which is displayed as a negative number in parenthesis in some views. A negative income figure actually means you’ve earned money.
Not yet - only shared logins for now. Book sharing is on the roadmap.
Not at the moment - only transaction matching during import. We don’t plan to add AI assistants - we’re focused on keeping your data private and fully in your control.
Yes. Upload a .csv or .json file. We also support bank statements in .csv,
.xls, or .xlsx formats - just follow the import steps.
Yes. Log in and sync before going offline. Don’t log out, and you can keep using the app for that session. When you’re back online, sync again.
